The Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM / UPC) is a Research Center located at the UPC university (Departament d'Enginyeria Civil i Ambiental). The research work developed covers the main physical processes that occur in the coastal zone and continental shelf, covering both the emerged and the submerged part of the land-sea border and with special emphasis on the interactions of these processes with typical engineering infrastructures in the sea.

The work of LIM / UPC is developed in both basic and applied research, within the following fields:

  • Coastal oceanography and oceanographic engineering
  • Functional and robust analysis of port and coastal structures
  • Physicochemical quality of coastal waters
  • Maritime climate: climate variability

This research activity benefits, through the Transfer and Technology Center of UPC, public organizations and private companies, both domestic and foreign. It also benefits the maintenance of a current teaching and based on real case studies of our coast. The result is shown in the abundant production of publications and communications made by the group.

In recognition of this work, LIM / UPC has been recognized as Singular Technical Scientific Facility (ICTS) by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The CIEM, hydraulic canal managed by the group, was recognized as a unique installation of the European Union in 1996
